I agree completely with Dr. Piper. These students are not entitled to anything besides a safe learning environment. The whole reason they are paying a lot of money to go to college is to receive a good education, but they should be their main worry. It was their choice to attend that college so why sit and complain the whole time. Students have a right to voice their opinions, but this particular group of kids are demanding ridiculous measures be taken such as firing teachers and other administrators. Unless the teacher is breaking some sort of law they have no right to complain and attempt to get them fired. I think Dr. Piper wrote a very good letter and made his point clear that he wasn't going to put up with the disruptive people.
As Dr. Piper said, many kids these days feel that they are entitled to much more than they are. Every time they don't get what they want, they are suddenly being "victimized." The main concern about college is education; they should not be preoccupying their time with meaningless riots and protests. These kids are demanding things that are necessary. Dr. Piper responded to the kids appropriately and took a firm stand in what he believes in. Other presidents feel "bullied" and give in to the students demands, but Dr. Piper has taken control of the situation.
I am in complete agreement with Dr. Piper, Kelly and Lindsey. These students should not feel as if the world revolves around them. I think it was in Dr. Pipers best interest to give them a wake up call and to let the students know that none of this behavior would be accepted. They are young men and women in college they should not be babied, instead they should get a deserving wake up call to grow up, just as Dr. Piper did. I agree with Dr. Piper when he says that some of the more prestigious colleges may bow down to their students every need, but that is not how he is going to run his school. Students need to learn what real life is like, and in real life no one is going to hold your hand and walk you through everything and give you a pass. In my opinion Dr. Piper is teaching his students a important life lesson the students should not take for granted.
I completely agree with Dr. Piper. Our generation has grown up being told to be selfish. We have also been taught through celebrities like the Kardashians that we can become rich and famous by doing absolutely nothing. It is important for students to understand the value of hard work because in the real world nothing will be simply handed to us. I understand having complaints about certain teachers or classes, but the complaints should be dealt with personally with the professor or the university, not through public riots. Students are not victims just because they are not getting what they want. Not everything in school, work and life is perfectly how we want it.
Our generation today seems to feel as if they have a sense of entitlement to everything they are not actually entitled to. When attending college, the tuition entitles students to a safe and great learning environment. Our generation today has become desensitized and selfish to the feelings of others around us. These students should work hard and focus on their studies regardless of the complaints of professors and/or courses. It is baffling to hear students start fights and riots over their complaints. Have they never approached a teacher or academic dean privately before?? It is repulsive how rude and entitled these students are acting. No one is perfect. Life is not perfect. Learn to live with it and make the best out of what's going on.
The pride that students today feel towards themselves is blown out of proportion. Like Dr. Piper said, students are entitled to a good eduction, but not entitled to teachers babying them and making sure not to "hurt their feelings." Even sometimes at Marian there are cases when students disagree with teachers and cry for help to the counselors, other students, and teachers. Our young generation for some reason believes that we know better than our elders, people who's education level is far above ours. I think that the idea Dr. Piper brings to OKWU is a very good message. We go to college to get a taste of the real world before we are out on our own and in the real world, people don't necessarily care about whether they offend you or not. With this said, i agree completely with the standards OKWU holds for its students.
I agree with Waldo and Peterson. It is such a prominent liberal focus in today's society that everyone is heard and everyone has equal rights (whether it be blacks, gays, or illegal immigrants). Now a days, children are being raised with the mind-set that they should be the change they wish to see. While this is a good and positive message, it is taken incredibly too far 50% of the time. This situation at OKWU is a prime example. These students felt so (wrongfully) entitled, they attempted to get their elders and teachers fired. College is not cheap, whether it is the parent, student, or a scholarship paying for the tuition. The fact that these young adults had the audacity to cause worthless and meaningless riots, while someone is paying thousands of dollars per year for them to receive an education, is beyond me. I've heard that college is so time consuming, so I am also confused as to how this group had so much free time on their hands...
I agree that this entitlement these students feel is uncalled for and that Dr. Piper is right in calling them out. These students are given a good and safe learning environment, which is what colleges are all about. It is incredibly childish to demand that the school give them certain things that they are not entitled to in the first place. It is especially juvenile to demand that certain teachers be fired and put them out of jobs just because you don’t like them. If you don’t like a teacher, you deal with it; you don’t demand that they be fired. These students think that they shouldn’t have to deal with situations like that, but the reality is that they will deal with people above them that they don’t like all their lives. These students have to learn that the real world is not what they are used to and that they can’t just take everything for granted.
