  1. Hearing about this tragedy breaks my heart. The loss of innocent people is always a sad and difficult thing to hear about. This reminds me of what the pope was saying about people becoming alienated from one another and this leading to random acts of violence. This shooting led to the loss of who knows how many innocent lives, although it says at least 7 they do not know yet how many lives were lost. These types of things are happening all over and it would seem as though every act is a result of alienation or a disconnect from society. I think that something needs to be done to give everyone a sense that they are not isolated, that they are not alone and to instill in people the respect and dignity that every human life deserves. This should not continue to happen all over the US, these shootings are detrimental to all parts of society. The killing of innocents must be stopped, I am not sure how this can happen in this specific situation, but something must be done to re instill the value of life into people hearts and minds.

  2. It is so unbelievably sad that there have been 294 mass shootings since the beginning of 2015. Way too many innocent people have lost their lives due to the selfishness and stupidity of others. Many believe that WWIII is going to begin, and honestly if these are the only headlines we see in the news today, it is pretty believable. I know Obama and the government have been trying to take guns away from many citizens because of random acts of violence like this, but that's like taking cars away from people because there have been so many fatal car accidents. People kill people, guns don't kill people. It is just so sad that people have turned our world into a place where others have to live in fear.

    1. The shooting at Umpqua Community College is yet another example of an atrocity resulting from gun violence. As Kenzie and Kristin said, the influx of shootings cannot be resolved simply by taking away guns. Guns do not have minds. They cannot pick targets and decide to shoot. It is the human behind the gun that is causing the destruction. If the government were to enact laws that took away guns from Americans, this would be a violation of the second amendment: the right to bear arms. The Framers of the Constitution added the Bill of Rights to ensure that the government would not infringe on our rights. They had experienced injustices under English rule, and they wanted to make sure that did not happen in America. The solution to the issue of guns is not to violate people’s rights and take away guns, but rather, find a way to educate people about gun safety and the implications of owning a gun. We can become a responsible nation through education and awareness.

    2. The statistic the Kenzie is just horrible. All of those deaths were the consequences of pure evil. Anyone who wishes to not only take their life, but the lives of others is the worst kind of human. But blaming guns for this tragedy is not the answer. There is no way for a gun to kill someone unless there is a human behind it. The real person to blame for this would be the shooter. Many of the shooters were said to be “mentally ill”. If we wanted to find a solution for these shooting we need to not take away guns but rather take a look at our society and how we handle the mentally ill and their care.

  3. I completely agree with Kenzie. It is the people who carry the weapons that need to be stopped, not the weapons themselves. Research in Chicago shows that even though they have the strictest gun laws, the city is overridden with gun violence. Merely banning guns will not eliminate the problem of gun violence. Mass shootings are horrible and the problem needs to be addressed, but gun control is not the answer. Perhaps more education on guns is necessary or even moral education. Making gun control laws would ultimately lead to violating the Second Amendment hence unconstitutional. I think these shootings suggest problems with the humans themselves. These shooters resort to violence because of serious personal issues. No more innocent lives need to be taken because of the violence of others.

  4. These shootings that seem to happen more frequently are incredibly saddening and distressing. It is frightening to think that this could happen anywhere, at any time. That being said, I think that something needs to be done to help prevent these tragedies. I believe that making it more difficult to obtain guns would likely lessen the frequency of these events. The people behind these shootings are often mentally unstable. If they did not have access to guns, they may not have the option for such a quick and offensive attack. I understand though, that people have access to guns outside of legal means. I still believe that Americans do have the right to bear arms. I think the best solution to this issue is to require education about gun safety, etc. before someone can acquire a gun/license. Looking at the past, we see that education about drugs and alcohol helped decrease its abuse. Isn't it worth a try to better educate people on the topic of guns before we take away the rights given to Americans in the second amendment? Even if it changes only one person's decision to use guns for the wrong reasons, that could mean multiple lives saved.

  5. When I heard of the gun shooting, I was mortified. There have been so many instances of school shootings recently, and all lives that have been lost are innocent people and that's so upsetting. I believe that there needs to be a prevention to incidents like this and needs to be an immediate change in gun control. We can't wait until lives are lost in order to make a change. There needs to be tests or questionnaires to see if people who own guns are qualified to have them. One questionnaire should ask the purpose of owning a gun and questions along those lines and the other should be a mental stability test so people who have mental illness or other issues don't own them and can't harm others. I know that change isn't immediate and that people will still end up doing what they want in the end, but I just don't want to hear about anymore innocent lives being lost to lack of gun control.

  6. Reading this story about the Oregon College shooting breaks my heart and truly shocks me that something like this is possible. I believe that gun control is a serious argument and needs a lot of recognition, however I don’t know how much gun control would have affected this situation. Like it said in the article,if someone has the intent of killing multiple people there is not a lot we can do to stop it. I am not saying that there is nothing we can do, I believe that we can control who owns a gun and make sure that they are using it for the right reasons. This is a traumatic story and its unbelievable how many shooting there have been in the recent years and Obama should work on improving gun control but it is a tough job to tackle. Not everyone agrees on the argument of gun control, so making one law against one side or the other is something that I don’t think is feasible without repercussions.

  7. It's so shocking to me that in this world we still have these insane school shootings. How can we live in such a cruel world. It is 2015. People should know better. If they have mental issues or are just plain insane, they should seek help instead of taking others lives. As many know, there are tons of people who have issues, and may think that what they did was okay. This is never okay. There should be a strict policy for guns, as maddie said. If the excuse is "they were mental" then they should not be eligible to have a gun. I know this would be a hard thing to change, after all the school shootings that have went on, but we can definitely take a stand, and put an end to this.

  8. In this day an age it's sad to say that school shooting happen more often than not. In order to get control over these situations is definitely higher security from metal detectors to more cameras to full on body searches further action needs to take place. Also a stricter gun policy needs to be put into effect. I just think there needs to be stricter laws on gun control the fact that any ordinary person is able to purchase one is definitely one main problem in these types ordeals. There should be various and more serious background checks even a mental stability test if possible. Owning a gun is a huge responsibility with the constant tragedy we have faced in the United States stricter security and gun laws need to be put in place to control these severe acts of violence.

  9. It truly saddens me that this type of horrific behavior is present in our world. I could never understand how someone’s mental capacity allows them to take innocent human lives. The problem in regards to gun control is, if there is someone with intent to actually kill others, it won’t matter much if guns are illegal. If they are willing to kill others, I don’t see them caring much about having to obtain the gun illegally. But, I definitely believe background screening of those buying guns needs to be intensified. Although we can’t prevent all criminals from obtaining guns, we can at least do our best to diminish their purchasing outlets. I also believe that armed security needs to be on every college campus. It is sad that it has come to that point, but when do we say enough is enough? There is becoming a pattern of events, and we need to protect the lives of students. If there had been armed security, who knows if lives may have been saved that were lost in the time waiting for police to show. Maybe they wouldn’t have been, but why not increase the chances by a simple action. On top of the already horrendous nature of this crime, it is even more disgusting that these lives were taken based on religious affiliation. It is beyond tragic and troubling that innocent lives were taken, specifically for what they choose to believe in. My heart goes out to all the victims, injured, and their families.

  10. Hearing of this shooting is sad and disheartening. Many innocent people lost their lives because of this hate crime. This news also strikes up many political issues. Regarding the shooter asking the victim's religious affiliation, I think it is inappropriate for anyone to be targeted because of their faith. Americans should be able to worship freely without feeling like they are in danger. It is important to advocate for higher religious tolerance and to call for an even larger support of people's beliefs and cultures. Also, regarding gun control, I believe that even if guns were more restricted this act would have still taken place. This man had a goal to hurt people and would find a way to carry it out, even if it was illegal. Armed security guards could have helped secure the scene, but we can never know for sure. The families and victims are in my prayers.

  11. I am saddened and horrified by this article. Another school shooting has taken place killing and injuring innocent people. These types of attacks have occurred too often in the pat two decades. Something must be done to try and stop these attacks. I am confident gun control is a key factor in preventing these shootings. I am convinced by shootings such as the attack in this article that we need to revisit the second amendment and make changes. I do not believe guns should be illegal to obtain, however, I do believe guns should be a lot harder to acquire. Whether someone is mental unstable or healthy, not just anyone can shop for a gun. Many people who are mentally stable are the ones with guns causing these attacks, not just those who are mentally ill. Other countries around the world have much stricter gun laws and have a significantly lower crime rate. I believe the U.S. should adopt laws that make obtaining a gun much harder.

  12. Hearing about this kind of tragedy is heart-breaking. So many innocent people have lost their lives because of these types of hate crimes. As many have stated, it is unfair to be targeted because of ones faith, however, I do not believe that was a factor in this shooting. I believe that the man asked them their faith so he could tell them that they will soon be with who they believe in. For example, if one answered they were christian, he would tell them that he/or she would go be with God now, and if one told him they were Muslim, he would tell them they were going to be with Allah now. It was not a consistent factor is the victims.
Regarding gun control, I believe that even if we instill stricter gun restrictions, people would still find a way to cause violence. Owning a gun is not illegal, killing is. If someone was willing to break the law by killing people, they would most likely be willing to break any other gun restrictions as well. The only thing that would help would be having more security guards and police around with weapons or a way to stop. On this day guns caused death, heartbreak and violence, but if a security guard had a gun it wouldn't have caused more violence, but prevented it. A security guard could have killed or even just injured the man and prevented him from taking those innocent lives.

  14. The problem of mass shootings and gun-violence is at an all-time high. The era of mass shootings seems to have began with Columbine in 1999 and continues today, with the most recent occurring at Umpqua Community College. My question is: Why has this problem escaladed so quickly these past 15 years? Is it simply because weapons are becoming more easily accessible? Is it because the weapons today can impose more damage than ever before? Or are there other contributing factors? Have violent videogames and religious disputes also contributed to the problem of mass shootings? I believe that all of these factors have contributed. I think that the Internet has made it significantly easier to acquire heavy-duty weapons without having to undergo thorough background checks. Furthermore, violent videogames have increased people’s interest in guns without actually informing gamers of the severity of gun violence. Moreover, these videogames desensitize gamers to gun violence. Moreover, as religious intentions increase, people feel more justified in imposing violence over people of other religions.

  15. More now than ever, mass shootings are occurring everywhere. I have no idea why this is, and i assume neither does the rest of the nation. The more people being killed and injured the more i begin to want to find a solution for this problem. But first, i want to find the cause. I do not think that gun control has anything to do with the mass killings happening not only in Oregon but anywhere in the united states. I also do not think that it is because of violent child video games. Although, i do think that religious disputes have contributed to the mass killings, i do not think that this is right nor okay for someone to die or get hurt because of their faith. This is never okay. Although, i think that for the Oregon shooting this is not the case. I think that this man was very sick and was not on his medication. He was not properly cared for by his guardians and honestly I blame his parents. i don't blame for his illness but i do blame them for not getting him the help he needs consistently.

  16. A lot of these shootings seem to happen more frequently and are similar in some rare cases. These types of horrendous acts are disgusting and will ruin humanity. It is horrible to think that this could happen anywhere, at any time. I think that something needs to be done to help prevent these tragedies. I believe that making it difficult to obtain guns would likely lessen the frequency of these events. The people behind these shootings are often mental and have psychological problems after going though hard times in their life. Some mental people commit these crimes as a sort of “revenge”. Having guns and being able to obtain them so easily and quickly make this apart of the problem. I believe that testing and checking the background of the buyers would make it safer and more efficient.

  17. When I heard of yet another school shooting, I was devastated. School shootings seem to be happening more and more frequently. It is a scary realization that school shootings can happen anywhere at any given time. That being said, there must be something done to prevent an increase and even decrease the frequency of school shootings. I do believe Americans should have the right to bear arms, but to what extent? Something needs to be done. Maybe that means making it much more difficult for guns to be accessed and only given in extreme measures. Also, I believe that learning about gun control is a very important aspect of gun safety. People need to learn about guns before they can buy them. Most people that cause school shootings are often mentally unstable or very depressed. Although those people may put on an act that they are seemingly fine to get the guns, we need to be more strict about giving them out. Clearly they are going to the wrong people. On another note, some other people who have caused school shootings were students that found a gun in a household, possibly from a parent. When guns are in homes, parents need to put them in a hidden and safe place under secure lock and key, and then secure a hiding place for the key. We need to take these measures so that we do not take away the rights of Americans in the second amendment, as Erin said. If we take these measures and continue to find new ways to help gun control, we can limit school shootings like this one.

  19. The shooting in Oregon was a heart breaking occurrence. Sadly it is not the only one of its kind. Mass shootings are becoming an epidemic in our country and it needs to be out to a stop. While I don't know what the best solution is, i don't believe harsher gun control laws are it. I don't believe that these laws would have a great effect on criminals at all. Someone with a goal of murder, would not be stopped merely slowed down by laws such as those suggested. However, a gun carrier trying to protect his or her self from these types of situations would not be able to. I believe that while gun control is not the answer, psychological education could be a possible solution.

  20. As many have said before me, it is terrible and tragic to hear about school shootings, but sadly it has gotten more common in the last few years then ever before. The main issue is obviously gun control. You cannot ban guns throughout America just because of incidents that involve them. As some also said before me, it is not the gun that does the malicious act, it is the person. Although guns are a dangerous weapon, they can also provide good safe fun if used correctly, like for example-hunting. The problem is not the gun itself, but the select people who buy them with the intention of hurting others. As Maddie said, i am stunned that just anyone, including myself, can buy a gun without having any authorization that says what it is for. The solution is simply to have better security and restrictions on who can buy guns and who cannot.

  21. Hearing about these kinds of things truly saddens me. Innocent children are being killed several times in different places. Many people want to understand why this happens and why they are being targeted for their faith. I think gun control may help minimize the amount of times this happens but won’t be able to eliminate it completely. People will still try and do these kinds of things whether it is illegal or not. They will do whatever they can to achieve their evil plan to hurt people even if they have to break the law. Enforcing this law can eventually changer things and hopefully have a good affect on the horrible crimes that our happening in our daily lives.

  22. It breaks my heart hearing about school shootings. School shooting are not happening more and more. It is scary to think that the shooting can happened anywhere at any time. There needs be something done about all of the school shootings. Many people believe gun control is the problem/cause of all of the shootings. I however, do not think gun control has anything to do with the shootings. Even if there was more gun control and laws about it, it would stop a person who want to kill people stop what they are doing.
