The government should not have such a large role in public education. Even though public schools are funded by the government the government should not have the power to make academic decisions. There is no evidence that public schools spend too much time testing. Most tests that they give are just to see what kids need to focus on whether it is a test topic or a study method. The government doesn't know what students need because they are not the teachers. If the only reason the governments involvement in public education is because of money it is not fair to any student attending a public school in America. Testing can be beneficial and helps students learn how to apply themselves and work hard. When I hear what my friends do at public schools and hearing about their tests makes seems much less harder than at a private school. If the government knew how many tests private schools give they would think twice about reducing testing at public schools.
I agree with Lydia in the sense that the federal government may not be in the appropriate position to make this call. They are not professionals in the education department. I understand the federal government funds the public school system and therefore they need to pay attention to the success rates among it, but I don’t believe they can accurately judged the situation. They seem to only be listening to the left-side teachers in the situation. I believe tests, both on a regular basis and those that are standardized, are an efficient process to measuring a student’s comprehension of a specific subject or topic. I’m not really sure how else you can fully test a student’s knowledge or analyze their understanding level. There will always need to be a way for teachers to make sure every student is on track in respect to standards per grade, which I believe can only really be done through weekly tests and standardized tests at least once or twice a year. Also, on the flip side, tests can actually be very helpful for students in their realization that they really do know the information, or need to go back over it and get help. I know there’s been times when I felt I really knew the information, but come test time I didn’t do so well, so I went back and was able to comprehend it far more than I though I would’ve. Sure, tests can be overwhelming at times, but there really isn’t any way around them.
I also agree with Kelli and Lydia in relation to the federal government making the decision to make this call. In this day an age testing has become a huge part to education and regarding our own personal futures. Teaching children young how to handle testing can only help them in the future with ACT's and SAT's, which determine our future. Even past high school many professions require exams such as LSATS, Series 7, MKAT, CPA exam, and many more. By young children being exposed to it know it helps train their brain. Yes the government does pay for the school systems but I don't know think they should be involved in making this call. Unless they have a better way for children to analyze a student’s comprehension then I don't think they should get rid of testing. Also with testing teachers are able to see who is grasping the subject and who is struggling with it. Yes tests can be stressful but that is what helps us learn the subject and be able to carry the information without throughout our schooling.
