This video was really helpful in explaining what is going on in the Syrian civil war. So many countries are involved and this clears up who is supporting what rebel groups and who is supporting the government. Although each country has its own reasons for giving support to specific groups, they need to keep in mind the possible consequences. With such an intricate web of allies and enemies, countries are probably hesitant to trust each other. If any country makes a wrong move which betrays an ally, or hurts an enemy, a chain reaction could be set off. This could result in increased conflicts or it could expand this to a larger war-not just between one country and its own people. For example, recently Russia has been bombing areas that it had agreed with its allies not to bomb. This is creating a lot of tension, especially with the United States. Luckily, we are looking to solve it diplomatically, but if this behavior becomes more prevalent, it could have terrible results.
I agree with what Erin stated above. This video did a really good job of simplifying and explaining the issues involved with the Syrian Civil War. This video was really informative with who was allies with who and who was enemies with who. For example, I didn't realize that the United States government was funding and training the Syrian rebels as they fight against their president. I did get a little confused with the complex network of allies and enemies, but after I re-watched the video, it made much more sense. As such a powerful nation, I think it is a good thing that we are providing aid to Syria to some degree. However, President Obama just released a statement that all of our troops will be staying overseas. With this being said, we may need to be focusing more on our own wars.
This video helped clear up everything that is going on in the Syrian civil war by showing me just how complex everything is. Even though it is a civil war, many countries with different agendas are getting involved and raising tensions. Civil wars are very self-explanatory; they are wars fought between different groups within a country, often going on without outside help. Even so, after the Cold War both the US and Russia have often taken active roles in smaller countries’ wars to help insure the outcome they want and this one is proving to be no different. However, the fact that there are other smaller countries involved in this as well makes it even more complicated. The fact that the alliances are so tangled and that Russia has been crossing some of its alliances’ wishes doesn’t help at all. If this continues, this civil war could escalate into a much bigger war, and we need to try and do what we can to prevent that.
I still believe that I should be more caught up on what is going on in Syria. My belief was that were were struggling over wether we should be or to what extent we should be involved in helping Syria, however, this video was very helpful. It showed me just how complex everything is. I am little confused still as to what the intentions are of all the different countries that are getting involved, but understand the reason the countries who are getting involved need allies. They need alliances because so many countries are involved and so many peoples lives are at stake, but...the alliances can become confusing. Russia has been crossing over some of its alliances and thus escalating the civil war that is going on.
I agree with Lucy. While the video did an excellent job explaining the Syrian civil war, I'm left with more questions than answers. Before watching the video, all I knew about the Syrian Civil War was that there were thousands of refugees fleeing it. Now that I know about the tensions between Assad and other groups, I'm stuck feeling more lost than before. Like Lucy, I'm left to wonder what the motives of the other countries and groups are, what alliances are being broken, what factors caused the war to truly take off in the beginning, and how the United States got involved. Also, the delicate balance of international relations displayed here really makes me appreciate the issues our government deals with on a day to day basis. While many of us (myself included) disagree with the government's foreign policy from time to time, affairs like this make me realize how difficult it would be to have to decide what to do next in international drama.
Similar to Isabella and Lucy, I was left a little confused after watching this video. I was not educated about the issues in Syria and was eager to watch this video. While it left me puzzled, the video did help me with the basic knowledge of the many issues happening in Syria. I was unaware other countries were fighting each other as well as fighting Syria. I also did not know countries were fighting against Syria solely because of Assad. The video, in my opinion, covered this topic too quickly, but it did help guide me through the basics of this global issue.
I agree with the other comments about the video. Before I watched this video I did not know how bad everything in Syria was. This video helped me understand what is going on over there. I did not know/understand what the United States was doing over there but now that I do, it think that what we are doing to help is good. The war in Syria is a civil war but many other counties are getting involved. It explained which countries are supported which side. The countries that are getting involves should think about what could happened. If the war does continue, I believe that it could turn into a bigger war.
This video helped me with understanding even more then I had already knew. I know that there is a huge issue in Syria where people's lives are being put in danger. I did know that other countries were fighting each other, but didn't know to what extent. Although I knew that there is an issue in Syria, but I did not realize how drastic the problems are and what countries are involved. I definitely agree with the other comments that had confusion over the reason of the involvement of the United States. I still feel lost as to what the motives are of the other country to try and resolve the issue.
This video is amazing!! There has been a lot of confusion for me about this civil war in Syria. I always hear about in on the news, but I never really know what they are talking about. I am really happy I watched this. This war is a very big deal, and everyone should have some intelligence about it. ISIS is quickly growing, and the United States is doing very little about it. Sending a few airstrikes isn’t enough to destroy a whole terrorist group. In my opinion, we need many American troops on the ground. Russia is taking control of this situation while the US is taking the back seat. Others may disagree, but I think the United States should be doing more in Syria.
