Although the signatories of this public statement seem very passionate, I do not think that they made strong enough points to defend their position. The first consequence of same-sex marriage that they mention is that children seem to thrive when they have both a maternal and paternal influence in their life. Many children these days are already growing up under the care of a single parent or divorced parents, so I find it hard to believe that growing up under the care of a same-sex couple would be much more detrimental. Moreover, gay couples have and would continue to adopt and raise children together, regardless of whether same-sex marriage was legal. Their second argument was equally as irrelevant in my opinion. They claimed that the people who oppose this new law would be vilified and pressured to conform to the new standards. This is going to occur when any new law is passed. It is only natural for people with opposing viewpoints to criticize one another and pressure each other to change their opinions.
As a widely debated argument, same sex marriage, though legal now, is still seen as an ongoing "issue" in the eyes of many. As it has been brought up in this article, the highlights of the many downfalls of same sex marriage are recognized and discussed. Despite my conservative beliefs, I have to agree with Sera. It is 2015 and times are changing - technology, profanity, and LGBT rights. Whether we like it or not, times are rapidly changing and with many liberals in charge it was only a matter of time before same sex marriage rights were granted. Agreeing with Sera, I believe the argument suggesting children should be brought up in a home with both parents present isn't valid. Despite studies that show children who grow up in homes with both parents typically preform better in life, this is not always the case. In this day and age divorce is becoming almost as common as marriage and more and more children are accepting a single parent home as the norm.
I agree with Maren. I do think that there will ever be a point where all citizens will reach an agreement over the beliefs of whether same sex marriage is right or wrong. That just won't happen, but, that is not to say that I do not agree with the article and the professors that were chosen and their stance on the issue. They stated that there is absolutely no dispute over whether it is a right or not and there isn't and I just believe that it will take time for the younger generation to infiltrate society and change the minds of the future generation. Those older generations with more conservative pasts may never come full circle and recognize those merited rights. Also, in regards to sera and marines comments about the children- what real study is there to prove that they are better of in single family homes, same sex homes, or a typically married home of a man and woman. There are so so many circumstances that would contribute to the future and well being of a child that I do not believe that anything can create a "norm"- same sex marriage being one of them.
Restating what Lucy and Maren said, I believe a time will come when all citizens eventually reach an agreement over the same sex marriage battle, right or wrong? It will take a very long time. However, I do agree with the article. In the article they are totally unbiased, not agreeing to either side. American citizens have to realize that the times are rapidly changing, especially with technology. The explicit language on TV, in movies, everything is becoming more blunt. Argo, we have to move along with these changing times. I believe my generation is very accepting and open to this idea. Whether we like it or not, its happening. I however don't believe that the way a child is brought up determines whether or not they are more prone to same sex marriage.
In addition to what Lucy, Maren, and Christina said, I believe there will be a time where everyone can agree on same sex marriage. Whether it takes a long time or not, I still believe that there will be a time. American have to realize that times are now changing and that the use of bad language is becoming more common. Therefore, we have to move along with these changing times. I believe that the generation I live in today is more accepting of the idea. I don't believe that the way a child is brought up determines whether or not they are more prone to same sex marriage. I believe that everyone should have a choice on who they marry no matter what sex they are.
