As time passes, the American population as a whole seems to become more and more uneducated on our own history. This is extremely dangerous for our nation. As we learned about it AP government, our founders took many of their ideas from Classical Republicanism. One of the ideas stressed the importance of civic virtue. Classical Republicanism emphasized that it was society’s duty to educate its youth on the skills to participate in politics and it was the citizens’ duty to be active in the community. We also addressed the importance of political efficacy. These people must have low political efficacy if they are unwilling to educate themselves on even the most basic aspects of American history. Furthermore, as Ben Collins mentioned in the video, every one of the people questioned has the right to vote. It is clear that Americans take this right for granted, as evident by their nonchalance over understanding general American history and events. It is disappointing to see that these Americans take their right to vote for granted and do not bother to educate themselves in order to make an informed voting decision because many people in America fought and died to expand voting rights and people in other countries are still fighting and sacrificing their lives for the right to vote today.
